SunHaven Outdoor Furniture Overview
SunHaven was founded in 2017 with the idea to provide stylish and durable outdoor furniture at an affordable price directly to customers. Since its launch, SunHaven has grown to offer many outdoor furniture collections and furniture items, including sofas, chairs, tables, chaise lounges, ottomans, dining sets, and more. More recently, the company has expanded to offer indoor furniture as well.
What we really love about SunHaven is its commitment to using high-quality materials to create outdoor furniture that is reasonably priced. Initially, All of SunHaven’s furniture is wicker-styled patio furniture made with HDPE wicker supported by powder-coated aluminum. But the company has recently launched new collections featuring powder-coated aluminum frames and eucalyptus wood.
SunHaven’s outdoor furniture sets come with thick, comfortable foam cushions that are wrapped in highly weather-resistant Olefin or Sunbrella fabric.
You will find that SunHaven offers its patio furniture in a wide range of set combinations (sectionals, sofas, loveseats, etc.), or you can purchase individual items. In addition to seating sets, the company also offers dining sets, bar sets, and outdoor decor.
In the sections below, we provide our full review of the following eight categories that we use to evaluate outdoor furniture (and that we explain in detail in our patio furniture ranking guide):
- Frame Material
- Fabric Material
- Cushion Material
- Shipping and Delivery
- Return Policy / Trial Period
1. Frame Material
Reason: SunHaven uses high-quality frame materials of HDPE, powder-coated aluminum, and eucalyptus wood. All of these materials are known to last years in your backyard.
SunHaven uses a material called High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) for its wicker-styled patio furniture. HDPE is a material that we highly recommend because this material can withstand nearly all outdoor conditions in any season without fading, cracking, or degrading. HDPE is a nonporous material that makes it very resilient against moisture, mold, and mildew. Also, this plastic is typically made with a UV treatment which enables it to withstand fading from long periods of exposure to the sun.
SunHaven uses powder-coated aluminum inner frames made on its wicker furniture, and its Parker collection is an aluminum-framed patio furniture collection. Aluminum is an excellent outdoor material because it is lightweight, highly durable, and low cost and maintenance. Aluminum is naturally resistant to corrosion in most environments (rust is a form of corrosion for steel and iron – bottom line: aluminum will not rust), but it can corrode if exposed to salt water or chlorine.
Finally, eucalyptus is another one of the best outdoor furniture materials because it has natural weather-resistant properties that make it resistant to moisture, sun, and heat.
In all, SunHaven uses some of the best frame materials for its outdoor furniture, creating furniture that should last a long time in your outdoor space.
2. Fabric Material
Reason: SunHaven uses Olefin fabric on most of its outdoor furniture and Sunbrella on one of its collections. These are some of the best outdoor fabrics.
On SunHaven’s patio furniture, you will find two types of high-quality fabric: Sunbrella and Olefin.
Sunbrella, one of the most popular outdoor furniture fabrics, is a solution-dyed acrylic (which means the color is part of the fabric, not simply applied on top of the fabric) that is treated with UV stabilizers throughout the manufacturing process of the fiber, making this fabric highly resistant to fading from UV exposure and normal backyard wear-and-tear. Additionally, Sunbrella is designed to repel water and stains, enabling this material to be mold and mildew-resistant.
Olefin is another great outdoor fabric that we highly recommend. Olefin is highly resistant to water and stains – any water that comes in contact with the fabric will pool on the fabric and runoff. Like Sunbrella, this is a solution-dyed material, meaning the color is part of the actual fabric, which causes the fabric to be very colorfast and resistant to fading from exposure to UV light. Finally, Olefin is a very durable yet comfortable material that is abrasion-resistant and should endure typical backyard wear and tear.
3. Cushion Material
Reason: SunHaven has thick >5″ high-density foam cushions wrapped in polyester batting. From our hands-on experience, these cushions are comfy and should last a long time.
SunHaven uses high-resilience foam cushions wrapped in polyester batting. The seat cushions are 5″ thick, while the back cushions are 8″ thick. From our review and hands-on experience, these cushions provide comfortable and plush seating.
Like most foam and polyester-filled cushions, you should expect that these cushions will soak up water if exposed to a heavy amount of rain. While the Sunbrella and Olefin fabric on these cushions will provide some resistance against light rain and occasional exposure to water, these fabrics are not completely waterproof. Thus, heavy rain will likely soak the cushions, and it may take several days for the cushions to dry out fully. This isn’t a knock on SunHaven at all – many outdoor cushions are like this unless you have QuickDry or reticulated foam cushions (these types of foam are designed to have water pass through the foam quickly and are fast drying.)
Reason: The vast majority of SunHaven’s patio furniture requires little assembly (some items, like a coffee table, may require minimal assembly to attach legs to the table)
SunHaven notes that all of its furniture comes fully assembled and ready to use once it is unpackaged. Additionally, the furniture sets are modular, so you can modify the layout of the furniture to best fit your patio layout.
From our hands-on experience, we found this to be absolutely true. All we had to do was take the furniture out of the box, remove any protective packaging on the frames, put the cushions on, and we were ready to go!
5. Shipping and Delivery
Reason: SunHaven has free shipping on all of its products, and the patio furniture ships quickly.
SunHaven offers free shipping on all of its products, and the company states that all products ship within 1 week of being purchased.
From our experience, we had a great shipping experience with SunHaven. After the order was placed, we got a call from the shipping company within a week, and they gave us an estimated delivery timeframe. Within a week of that call, we had the furniture delivered to our house! It was a great shipping and delivery experience!
Reason: The 1-year warranty is the industry average for patio furniture.
SunHaven offers a 1-year limited warranty on its outdoor furniture from the date of purchase. This is typically what we see as an industry average.
7. Trial Period / Returns
Reason: The 15-day return period enough time to try out the furniture, but the restocking fee is a bit high.
SunHaven offers a 15-day window to return your furniture for a refund if you are not satisfied with your purchase. One thing to note is that SunHaven states that returns are subject to a 20% restocking fee, and items must return in new condition.
Reason: On a comparable basis for similar high-quality furniture, we find that the price of this outdoor furniture should fit most, if not all, people’s budgets shopping in this price range.
We track the prices for hundreds of outdoor furniture items. We evaluate the typical cost of an outdoor sofa, sectional, loveseat, chair, dining table, coffee table, and other outdoor items and look for comparable features (frame materials, fabric materials, and cushion materials). Based on our analysis, we have found that SunHaven furniture is very reasonably priced, and in many cases priced better than comparable brands (see our comparison of SunHaven to other popular wicker patio furniture brands).
Overall, we think you will be hard-pressed to find high-quality furniture like this at a better price.
Common Outdoor Furniture Questions
Rain: Can SunHaven outdoor furniture be left out in the rain?
SunHaven’s frame materials of HDPE wicker, aluminum, and eucalyptus frames are excellent water-resistant materials. HDPE is a nonporous material that is very resilient against moisture, mold, and mildew. Aluminum is rust-proof. Eucalyptus’s natural oils help protect it from moisture.
SunHaven uses Sunbrella and Olefin for fabric on its furniture, and these materials are designed to be water and stain-resistant, enabling these materials to be mold and mildew-resistant.
Make sure you store or protect your cushions during heavy rain because the foam cushions can retain water if left out in these conditions. The Olefin and Sunbrella fabric is not waterproof, and water will get to the foam cushion during heavy periods of rain. This will result in soaked cushions that will require a few days to dry.
Sun: Can SunHaven outdoor furniture be left out in the sun?
HDPE, the main material in SunHaven’s wicker-styled patio furniture, performs very well in the sun. The color of the HDPE is dyed all the way through the material, so HDPE will not discolor from sun exposure like other plastics might. Aluminum and eucalyptus, too, are known to perform well in the sun too.
Sunbrella used on SunHaven’s cushions is a solution-dyed acrylic (which means the color is part of the fabric, not simply applied on top of the fabric) that is treated with UV stabilizers throughout the manufacturing process of the fiber, making this fabric highly resistant to fading from UV-exposure. The same can be said for Olefin fabric – this is a solution-dyed fabric that is known to be highly fade-resistant.
Winter: Can SunHaven outdoor furniture be left out in the winter?
We rate furniture made out of HDPE as the closest material to a ‘set and forget’ type of furniture that can endure nearly all seasons and climates. So, SunHaven’s wicker furniture should endure winter conditions reasonably well. Additionally, powder coated aluminum is known to withstand almost all climate and weather conditions, especially winter.
Olefin and Sunbrella fabric used on SunHaven’s cushions can likely withstand mild winter conditions without degrading; however, extra care should be taken if you expect snow or freezing conditions. In all, we recommend that outdoor furniture always be covered or stored in winter conditions or during extended periods of time that you do not expect to use the furniture.
Maintenance: Does SunHaven outdoor furniture require much maintenance and cleaning?
The materials used by SunHaven are known to be very low maintenance. HDPE, powder-coated aluminum, Olefin, and Sunbrella typically only need mild soap and water to clean most dirt and stains away. Eucalyptus, may require a regular application of protective sealants or oil to enhance its weather-resistant properties.
If you accidentally keep your cushions out during a heavy rain, you will likely need to air the cushions out for a few days to let the foam completely dry.
Eco-Friendly: Is SunHaven outdoor furniture environmentally friendly?
HDPE and aluminum can be recycled for additional uses when you are done with your SunHaven furniture.
SunHaven’s Ashton set is made with FSC-certified eucalyptus wood, meaning that this set is eco-friendly.
Sunbrella fabric is manufactured without any harmful chemicals, and the manufacturing process produces little wastewater. One drawback of Sunbrella is that solution-dyed acrylic is not directly recyclable. However, Sunbrella has a “Recycle My Sunbrella” program that allows end-users to send fabric that has reached the end of its useful life back to Sunbrella to find additional applications for the fabric like automotive insulation and felt.
There is very little waste made during the production of Olefin. Olefin was created by finding the use of propylene, which was once burned off during oil production. Additionally, Olefin fabric can be recycled multiple times to reproduce additional Olefin fabric.
Options: Are there many style options for SunHaven outdoor furniture?
Yes! SunHaven offers a wide range of outdoor furniture through its multiple collections. There are several styles and colors to choose from in the following collections:
In addition to these collections, SunHaven offers a wide range of patio furniture options to fit your backyard needs: sectionals, sofas, chairs, chaise lounges, ottomans, dining sets, bar sets, bistro sets, coffee tables, side tables, etc.
