Analysis Overview and Summary

At the beginning of 2022, we cataloged nearly 1,200 patio furniture pieces available from a wide range of retailers and brands (see the final section of this post for a list of the retailers and brands in this analysis). We recorded the type of materials used, items available, and the price for each piece or set. We then grouped common items (e.g., bistro sets, sofas, etc.) and analyzed the prices associated with different items within the group. From this analysis, we determined there are three types of patio furniture quality:

  • Budget: These can be considered ‘no-frills’ patio furniture items – furniture items in this category aren’t the most stylish (not to say that they don’t look good), but they get the job done. Need a basic patio chair to last you a season or two? There are plenty of cheap options that fit this need in this category.
  • Mixed-Quality: Outdoor furniture or outdoor sets in this category uses various material qualities, some more durable than others. You can find many styles in this category, and there are plenty of outdoor furniture options that fall in this category that can meet your outdoor needs. But, a key observation of furniture in this price range is that the materials used are not always of the best quality, which is reflected in the price. That’s not to say furniture items will not last or great options. Instead, you can find some great buys in this category and will be pleased with the durability of many options in these price ranges.
  • High-Quality: Patio furniture or patio sets in this category will be some of the best quality furniture you can buy. Sure, these do cost more than those in other categories, but you’ll find that these items will last many seasons because of the high-quality material options used in these outdoor furniture pieces. Plus, you will find some of the most stylish pieces in this price range.

Material Quality Difference in each Category

Budget: Patio furniture in this price range will typically be made of powder coated or galvanized steel. Additionally, you won’t find too many outdoor furniture pieces in this price range with cushions. Instead, patio seating options will be made out of sling (or mesh).

Mixed-Quality: In this price range, you will find a range of style options, and you will find patio seating options with cushions. The common types of materials in this category are:

  • Wood – Acacia
  • Metal – Powder coated steel, wrought iron
  • Wicker – PE rattan wicker
  • Fabric – Polyester. Some branded performance fabrics
  • Cushions – “Sponge” foam or polyfiber fill. Cushions are typically about 3″ thick.

In all, these materials make good patio furniture that should last a few years. But, under the certain conditions, these materials can show signs of wear and tear quickly.

High-Quality: If you are looking for very stylish patio furniture that will last many years, then look for outdoor furniture items in this price range (or at least patio furniture items with these material options). The common material types in this range are:

  • Wood – Teak
  • Metal – Aluminum
  • Wicker – HDPE or All-Weather Wicker
  • Fabric – Sunbrella / Olefin / Other branded performance fabrics

You can expect these pieces to last year-round and for many years with these materials. Often you will find that these furniture items come with many years of warranty, excellent customer service options, and other features that you typically expect from premium products.
